june 21, 2007 luggage store gallery Filmmaker and DJ Mike Missiaen showed work for super 8 and turntable Filmmaker and sound artist Cecilia Elguero presented microtonal cinema with live accompaniment by fellow collaborators Bookworm, drslone and Brian Rogers [cbradio, Brookhaven, Fake Cake Gallery, Solos Records] This show explored two distinct technical approaches in film and music. Mike's analog formats of super-8 and vinyl contrasted with Cecelia's digital video and backing bank of live electronics, yet the work spoke to shared constraints: the length of the loop, and the dynamic of additive and reductive process. Using three-minute, 20 seond reels, Mike edited in camera to create complete visual poems backed by altered nickel-bin vinyl, pitch shifted and effected to bring the audience to the brink of recognition. Cecelia placed iconic imagery though accelerating geometries as the audio bed grew in complexity and rhythm, overlayed by her redemptive vocal. The contrast extended to content: as much as Mike's work is place-based (from an iconic view of Sutro tower to the avian community of long-term parking lots of SFO), Cecelia's is virtual, a space existing in geometric planes only possible through digital tools. It was great to focus on this small format work in an indoor setting. Mike and Cecilia present at Corridors using these same techniques, providing hundreds of Corridor visitors with the experience of discovering buried treasure: delicate installations amid an often blurring pageant of light and sound. coming soon images audio video |
