the illuminated corridor a collision of public art, live music and film |
event plan questions?
Exactly what is happening at the May 30 Corridor? On Saturday May 30, 2000 a couple dozen or more artists will set up installations in three parts of Middle Harbor Shoreline Park: the Second Cove, the Port Arnold Flagpole and the Oval Lawn. The installations include sound sculptures and film and video projectors showing original, experimental film and video onto the park surfaces, including the ground. The projections will be accompanied by a live radio broadcast. Residents are encouraged to bring an FM radio or join the broadcast as listeners to the webstream. Where is Middle Harbor Shoreline Park? MHSP, as it is often called, is at the end of 7th Street in West Oakland where 7th joins Middle Harbor Road. Here's a map. Do I need a car to get there? Parking is limited at MHSP (200 spaces) and there is no parking on 7th Street or Middle Harbor Road. The penalty for parking in the red zones of these roads is swift and severe. Please don't do it. To ensure a spot at the Corridor, arrive by 7pm in a carpool or use alternative transportation. Important: once the parking lot is filled at MHSP, no visitors in cars will be admitted. What's the alternative to driving to the Park? MHSP is 1.5 miles from West Oakland BART, a straight shot out 7th Street that is easily biked, but caution is essential as there is no bike lane. AC Transit Bus 13 serves the park on the weekends, but not after 5pm. If you're using AC Transit, arrive early with a plan to obtain a lift back to BART. Walking to BART takes a little over a half hour over rough territory (no sidewalks, industrial settings). Think before you head out. I'm at the park and the gates are closed. What gives? Parking is limited at MHSP (200 spaces). Our permit for the event states that once the parking lot is filled at MHSP, no visitors in cars will be admitted. Please note there is no alternative parking on 7th Street or Middle Harbor Road. The penalty for parking in the red zones of these roads is swift and severe. Please don't do it. To ensure a spot at the Corridor, arrive by 7pm in a carpool or use alternative transportation. Please remember: once the parking lot is filled at MHSP, no visitors in cars will be admitted. This Corridor starts at 7pm with a sunset performance in the Second Cove and ends at 9:30pm. The projections will be visible at ">civil twilight, which is shortly after sundown or "dark o'clock." Nope. Corridors are free and open to the public. We also accept donations to support our work. Are Corridors wheel-chair accessible? Yes. Visitors using wheelchairs and other mobility assistance are alerted to watch for cable ramps throughout the Corridor. If visitors need additional assistance to attend, please contact the Project Coordinator to arrange access. Should I bring my lawn chair and blanket to a Corridor? You may. However we have found that the ability to wander a Corridor, much like wandering a gallery, is a way of discovering the full range of performance. Will there be food or drink to purchase at the Corridor? No. No vending is allowed at Corridors. Visitors should bring their own consumables and use the appropriate recycling and refuse containers for any waste. It's raining. Will the Corridor still happen? Yes. Corridors are held rain or shine, and, in the case of MHSP, in wind or cold. Lots of wind. More than you thought. Please prepare for inclement weather, dress in layers, follow safety instructions to protect against electric shock, and enjoy a unique experience of projected light refracted through wet atmosphere. When will a specific performance actually start? Check the printed program upon arrival to a Corridor for specific start times for performances. The schedule in the printed program, as you may have guessed, is subject to change at any time. The musical performances in the Corridor use low-power fm transmission in lieu of habitat-agitating loudspeaker systems. A pair of headphones is also advised. Who's in charge of the Corridor? Prior to a Corridor, email Suki O'Kane, Project Coordinator. During a Corridor, any tech crew member can answer your questions and address your concerns. They are easily identified by their uniform of white lab coat, a clipboard, and a headlamp. That is, until everyone at a Corridor begins to wear white lab coats and headlamps while carrying a clipboard. We welcome that problem. You may also ask Corridor artists, and they will guide you to a tech crew member. How do I sign up for/ unsubscribe from Corridor announcements? How do I get my film-music project included in a Corridor? The Corridor is always seeking new artistic collaborations and opportunities to showcase intermedia work. Please review our latest call for proposals. How do I volunteer in a Corridor? The Corridor is an all-volunteer project organized by filmmakers and musicians wearing several hats: curatorial, outreach and marketing, fund development, permitting and logistics, and technical production. We encourage volunteers to join our roughly twice-yearly production efforts to make a glad gift of their expertise, or to acquire new skills. Please contact the Project Coordinator to discuss your interests. |
